Campaigns

These are the campaigns to win our rights.

The campaigns use plain, simple language. It is conservative, direct and practical, aiming to garner the support of as many people as possible for our cause by addressing our specific needs and deliberately avoiding unrelated issues. It puts forwards detailed solutions, to meet the needs of disabled people.

This is to make it possible for all members to speak out on all issues and organise with others to win all our rights.

Over time, resource material will be freely provided to campaign with, including, training support, talk outlines, information leaflets, slides, video interviews, photos, etc.

Disabled United has adopted this draft and seeks broader input from people who are invited to provide feedback on the draft.

  • Why: Disabled United was formed on March 18 2024, to fight against the funding cuts. With more government cuts planned, we need to openly campaign for our goals and gather support for them.
  • What: This document uses plain, simple language. It is conservative and practical, aiming to garner the support of as many people as possible for our cause by addressing our specific needs and deliberately avoiding unrelated issues. This is not about the research and problems in detail, which other groups have done.
  • How: A separate document outlines our peaceful campaign strategy.
  • Where: Uses of this document include;
    • Members know what they are supporting and campaigning for.
    • Finding principled common ground to work together with other organisations, such as unions.
    • Provides website structure, messaging and editorial policy guidance.
    • Email campaign newsletters.
    • Published as simple pamphlets.
    • On placards, banners, petitions, press statements, posters, and badges.
    • Giving Radio & TV interviews.
    • Used by speakers at public meetings and in presentation slides.
  • Amending the Policy: Disabled United members can put forward remits and vote to amend campaign policy.
  • Website: The campaign section of the English-language website uses the policy headings as a navigation structure. The heading used on the Māori and NZ Sign Language websites will be worked on later. https://eng.dunz.org.nz/campaigns/
  • To do: Move non-essential details into supporting paragraphs. Use references to articles and research to support these demands.
  • Suggestions: Include a simple Google form to “Add Your Campaign” to get more suggestions.. The committee will vote on changes to the document until membership voting is possible.
  • Rename: “Charter for the rights of the disabled” or something similar. Do you have a better name?

Campaign Policy

A simple outline structure is used to organise each policy statement.

Campaign FAQ

Each policy statement uses a common format.

Campaign Strategy

The strategy is to build the self-confidence of disabled people by involving thousands of people in peaceful activity to win the hearts and minds of the majority of the public who will make the government meet our needs. This is similar to how women's suffrage was won in NZ in 1893 after decades of campaigning by supporters.

Petitions, resolutions of support, open signed letters, press statements, delegations, talks, public meetings, and peaceful protests are all ways that can work depending on the situation.

The point is to win small victories and grow to win bigger victories.
